Tolls in United Kingdom: Everything you need to know

Select another country and learn all about its tolls and road charges

Although there is no national toll network in the UK, heavy goods vehicles with foreign registration plates must pay different fees or charges for accessing UK road infrastructure, such as the Dartford Tunnel, which is one of the busiest crossings by carriers bound for England.

In addition to traffic fees in specific areas, fees are also charged for various bridges and tunnels, managed by independent operators with their own rates.

    Ultra-low emission zone – ULEZ

This fee is only required to circulate in London. It is valid for one day, always starting from midnight.

Vehicles that meet the required standards are exempt from payment. It covers the area up to the North Circular Road (A406 and South Circular Road (A205) but does not include any of them.

This registration operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year (except December 25) and can be paid up to 90 days before, or until midnight on the third day after travelling through the area.

    Congestion Charge

Driving around central London costs an additional £15 per day.

The rate operates all year round from 07:00 to 22:00, except on December 25.

    DVS Regulations

The DVS measures the driver’s direct view from the cab, thus assessing risks to other vulnerable users, such as pedestrians or cyclists, and is measured by stars. If the vehicle has a low DVS stars rating, you will need to install an additional safety system. To acquire this permit and qualify the vehicle correctly, it must be managed through the vehicle manufacturer.

Failure to comply with any of these regulations could result in fines, with compliance being policed through a camera system.

    HGV Levy

The payment of the fee will be mandatory for vehicles registered outside the United Kingdom of more than 12,000 kg that circulate on affected roads & motorways.

UK HGVs are taxed according to the UK tax laws.
