Tolls in Italy: Everything you need to know

Select another country and learn all about its tolls and road charges

In Italy the network of roads subject to the payment of tolls extends to just over 6,700km, where there is a combination of closed and open sections. The closed sections charge is based on the distance travelled, while the open sections have a fixed amount for each category.

On Italian motorways, as well as in the Strait of Messina and the Milan urban toll (Area C), both light and heavy vehicles must use an electronic device.

Frequent questions abou tolls in Italy

Find answers to frequently asked questions about tolls in Italy.

The maximum speed allowed is 130 km/h, and 110 km/h when it rains. Drivers who have a driver’s license for less than 3 years can drive on motorways at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. 50 km/h in cities and 90 km/h on other roads.

The non-payment of a toll can be made within an additional period of 15 days. The motorway will issue a “mancato pagamento” ticket with the indications for payment (online or at toll booths) and the corresponding amount.

Failure to pay the toll on time will increase the amount due and may result in fines of up to € 350.

Motorways “A” (Autostrada) are signposted in green. National road “SS” (Strada Statale) and district roads “SP” (Strada Provinciale) are signposted in blue. White road signs indicate local destinations.

The Italian network only permits one active device per vehicle.

First of all, we recommend checking the device to ensure:

  • If it is correctly configured (license plate, axles, weight).
  • If the network of the country that issued the fine is activated
  • If there is no error on the screen or any red light appears.

It is also advisable to check with the driver if the device had any errors that were not notified, or if the device was disconnected from the vehicle’s power supply.

In addition to the above, you can verify the consumption of the device during that date to check if the journey has been recorded correctly and the fine has been issued in error.

In Vrio we offer a professional fine management service specializing in the analysis and appeal of this type of toll fines. We take care of the whole process on your behalf keeping you on the road.
