Frequent questions about tolls in France

Find answers to frequently asked questions about tolls in France.

France has one of the densest motorway networks in the world.

Motorways are marked with the letter “A” (Autoroute) and the road number, the main roads are marked with the letter “N” (Nationale). The county roads are marked with the letter “D” (Départment).

In toll booths, the lanes reserved for the electronic device are marked with an orange “t” and it is not necessary to stop, but to reduce the maximum speed to 30km when passing through the toll barrier.

The different speed limits on French roads are:

  • 130 km/h in dry weather with good visibility.
  • 110 km/h in the rain or wet weather.
  • 50 km/h with visibility of less than 50 metres.
  • 100 km/h if a caravan or trailer is towed.

Overtaking is only allowed if the speed is greater than 80 km/h.

The fine / penalty imposed for non-payment of tolls in France can be up to € 750.

To travel from France to England, the fastest way is to use the Eurotunnel. You can check our routes on Copilot and make your reservation easily and quickly.

First of all, we recommend checking the device to ensure:

  • If it is correctly configured (license plate, axles, weight).
  • If the network of the country that issued the fine is activated
  • If there is no error on the screen or any red light appears.

It is also advisable to check with the driver if the device had any errors that were not notified, or if the device was disconnected from the vehicle’s power supply.

In addition to the above, you can verify the consumption of the device during that date to check if the journey has been recorded correctly and the fine has been issued in error.

In Vrio we offer a professional fine management service specializing in the analysis and appeal of this type of toll fines. We take care of the whole process on your behalf keeping you on the road.
