Tolls in Hungary: Everything you need to know

Select another country and learn all about its tolls and road charges

Hungary introduced in July 2013 the electronic toll based on distance traveled, replacing the electronic vignettes system, modifying the payment system in proportion to the use of the road network according to each user.

Hungary is included in multi-country toll devices. However, the country still operates its own individual toll device (HU-GO). By clicking on the following links, you can access more information relating to tolls in Hungary:

About 6,500km of public networks (main routes, motorways and main roads) are subject to toll payment.

  • TOLL ELIGIBLE VEHICLES

    • For vehicles whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 3.5t, it is necessary to purchase an electronic vignette (e-vignette), whose validity can be 10 days, a month or a year, and there are a total of 7 categories for light vehicles.
  • TOLL CHARGES
    • The fare is calculated based on the type of road, the vehicle category and the EURO emission class.
    • In the case of vignettes, it depends on the type of vehicle (cars, motorcycles, caravans, minibuses…).
  • PAYMENT METHODS
    • All variants accept credit cards (except American Express for online purchases), fleet or fuel cards and bank transfers (except at physical distribution points), either in prepaid or postpaid mode.
    • To use the HU-GO device it is necessary to create an account on the website, log in and buy and recharge the device at a point of sale.

Frequent questions about tolls in Hungary

Manual routes must always be paid in advance and the indicated route must be followed, as the route is valid only after payment.

The fine amount imposed for non-payment or failure to provide adequate information varies depending on the severity, frequency and, in the case of temporary routes. The rectification time of incorrect data varies depending on the type of breach/error.

First of all, we recommend checking the device to ensure:

  • If it is correctly configured (license plate, axles, weight).
  • If the network of the country that issued the fine is activated
  • If there is no error on the screen or any red light appears.

It is also advisable to check with the driver if the device had any errors that were not notified, or if the device was disconnected from the vehicle’s power supply.

In addition to the above, you can verify the consumption of the device during that date to check if the journey has been recorded correctly and the fine has been issued in error.

In Vrio we offer a professional fine management service specializing in the analysis and appeal of this type of toll fines. We take care of the whole process on your behalf keeping you on the road.
