itemprop=\"text\" ><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With rumors\u00a0of\u00a0empty supermarket shelves\u00a0and no\u00a0toys\u00a0to place\u00a0under the tree, consumer\u00a0concern continues to\u00a0grow about the impacts of the global supply crisis, this article considers the contributary factors that are putting pressure on the global supply chain\u00a0this Christmas.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_cannot_blame_the_drivers_there_simply_aren%C2%B4t_any_to_blame\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">You cannot blame the drivers, there simply aren\u00b4t any to blame.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The well-publicized driver shortage\u00a0has been linked to most transport related news stories in recent times,\u00a0also\u00a0playing its part in the fuel shortage crisis\u00a0as there were not sufficient drivers to deliver the fuel. The media speculation surrounding this\u00a0also\u00a0aided spiraling\u00a0fuel\u00a0prices\u00a0as people went into panic mode. Thankfully there was no fuel shortage and with a little help from the\u00a0army things have returned to normal and there are\u00a0also\u00a0signs of prices\u00a0dropping.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">America, which\u00a0is\u00a0also experiencing a significant driver shortage\u00a0is\u00a0facing the same challenges that we face here in the UK, so the issue is certainly not isolated to the UK and EU\u00a0alone, therefore,\u00a0we cannot land\u00a0all of the current\u00a0supply chain\u00a0issues on the driver shortage, although the problem\u00a0of driver shortage is very real, it is an industry wide issue spanning\u00a0the UK, Europe and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As autonomous vehicles are still years away,\u00a0drivers are going find themselves in real demand for the foreseeable future, however, the issues around bringing more people into the industry are significant, with drivers\u00a0citing poor working conditions, lack of suitable roadside facilities, a lack of secure parking,\u00a0long periods away from home, a lack of respect from other road-users\u00a0and warehousing employees to name but a few\u00a0of the daily challenges faced.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are many issues that need to be resolved\u00a0by government and the industry in general to\u00a0start working together to create an environment that is more appealing, respected and safer to work in before we are going to see any changes to the current\u00a0exodus from the sector.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Add_some_festive_PORT_and_an_Evergreen_into_the_mix\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Add some festive PORT\u00a0and an Evergreen\u00a0into the mix<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10765\" src=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/port-ferry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/port-ferry.jpg 700w, https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/port-ferry-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">News that\u00a0the major ports, including Felixstowe, the UK s largest container port are rejecting cargo ships when trying to enter the ports,\u00a0which\u00a0has led to a buildup of ships waiting to dock and unload their cargos.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some shipping companies plan to\u00a0divert vessels away from UK ports to unload elsewhere in Europe because of a build-up of cargo, adding further delays to the supply chain.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Again,\u00a0there are also similar delays in other ports around the world, such as in America which is also experiencing significant backlogs at major cargo ports, such as Los Angeles and Long Beach,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The lorry driver\u00a0shortage\u00a0has\u00a0also\u00a0been dragged into the firing line in relation to the shipping and port problems, citing that\u00a0the lack of drivers means that cargo is not being cleared\u00a0in normal operating times, adding further pressure on the system and getting products to market.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And then there was the\u00a0well-publicized parking of the\u00a0Evergreen\u00a0in the\u00a0Suez canal,\u00a0adding further misery to a system that was already under pressure.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Brexit_Effect%E2%80%A6\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Brexit Effect\u2026<\/span><\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10776 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/brexit-manifestacion.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/brexit-manifestacion.jpg 750w, https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/brexit-manifestacion-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/brexit-manifestacion-705x471.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yes\u2026 the dreaded Brexit word is still making the rounds&#8230; Some industry experts still suggest that Britain\u00b4s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/why-a-thin-deal-is-better-than-no-deal-for-britain-s-businesses-1.1137972\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exit from the EU<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is a large\u00a0cause for the current chaos,\u00a0citing\u00a0\u00a0the\u00a0additional constraints and red tape that is now in place in relation to the flow of goods\u00a0between the UK and EU.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Additionally, many traders had anticipated the potential problems at the beginning of the UK\u00b4s exit and prepared for this transition by purchasing more stock than normal to help maintain supply levels, this stockpiling put pressure on warehouse space meaning that goods were being left in cargo ports for longer than normal following the UK\u00b4s departure at the beginning of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, we do know that the HGV driver shortage is more closely linked to\u00a0the\u00a0Brexit\u00a0process, due to\u00a0the exodus\u00a0of foreign workers in the post-Brexit era\u00a0who either felt pushed out (due to changes in residency requirements) or simply had better offers from home or elsewhere in Europe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whilst there is evidence to suggest the initial impact of Brexit absolutely slowed the flow of goods between the UK and Europe as a result of the additional customs requirements and administration, there has been a steady recovery since the second quarter of 2021 where volumes are starting to return to normal levels.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"And_then_there_was_and_is_and_will_be_Covid\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">And then there was (and\u00a0is, and\u00a0will be) Covid.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10761 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/keep-your-distance.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/keep-your-distance.jpg 700w, https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/keep-your-distance-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The global pandemic has certainly had a leading role to play in the current supply situation. Whilst global consumer demand slumped during 2020 as countries, industry\u00a0and the world in general went into lockdown, it wasn\u00b4t long before consumers turned\u00a0to the internet to help them acquire the goods and services they required to adjust to the new circumstances.\u00a0New variants make it very likely that this disruption will continue as we face further outbreaks and lockdowns across the globe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This pent-up demand and internet explosion placed huge pressure on the\u00a0businesses, factories,\u00a0ports, shipping and transport companies alike\u00a0who had to try and\u00a0maintain some level of production\u2026\u2026. which\u00a0we now know isn\u00b4t easy during a lockdown.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some sectors were not able to respond as demand for certain goods was simply too much, in particular, anything that requires a semi-conductor or micro-chip, which if we are honest is just about everything these days.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As consumers demand grew for technology, computers, phones and anything linked to better, faster and more reliable connectivity the chips started to dry up, demand simply outweighed supply capacity. Today, we can see this throughout many sectors from tech, automotive, transport\u00a0etc\u00a0where lead times for vehicles now runs into late 2022, with some companies quoting 2023.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Car_production_in_Britain_for_instance_suffered_a_nearly_30_per_cent_decline_in_August_2021_with_only_37000_cars_manufactured\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Car production in Britain, for instance, suffered a nearly 30 per cent decline in August 2021, with only 37,000 cars manufactured.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This initial explosion in demand created imbalance in the chain, as huge volumes of goods were being shipped to meet customer expectations. As we have already discussed, the ports were unable to keep up with this flow of goods.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This imbalance has\u00a0also\u00a0led to a buildup of containers in ports and a shortage of\u00a0empty containers\u00a0flowing\u00a0back to Asia and other locations to pick up new supplies, meaning the key assets in the supply chain were no longer where they needed to be,\u00a0causing\u00a0huge\u00a0logistical problems not only in Britain but\u00a0also\u00a0in North America and continental Europe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Given the supply chain is\u00a0designed\u00a0to cope with some spikes in demand, the concept and system is optimized to ensure that all the assets are in the right place at the right time,\u00a0to ensure the flow of goods throughout the system is smooth and constant.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With containers in the wrong place and some Chinese ports dormant or operating at reduced capacity, freight rates have soared by up to\u00a015\u00a0times in some cases from only two years ago, container prices have also\u00a0soared adding further to the overall freight prices that exist today.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Does_all_of_this_point_to_a_Messy_Christmas\"><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Does all of this point to a Messy Christmas?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10769\" src=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/messy-christmas-supply-chain.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/messy-christmas-supply-chain.jpg 700w, https:\/\/vrioeurope.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/messy-christmas-supply-chain-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One thing is for sure, consumers are going to have a tougher time sourcing\u00a0their presents than ever before, for the reasons we have already discussed.
